Cavalier Camp: QB Depth Chart Taking Shape

While Virginia coach Al Groh says, “I don’t think at this stage anybody on the team is eliminated at any position,” the situation at quarterback seems to be gaining some clarity. Marques Hagans, as expected, is getting all of the work with the first team in scrimmages and seven-on-seven drills. The Nos. 2, 3 and 4 positions seem to be shaking out as well.

Christian Olsen is clearly the No. 2 guy. He appears to have a solid grasp of the offense while getting the bulk of the turns with the second unit. “I’m not going to go out there and try to do everything on my own, no quarterback can do that,” Olsen said. “We have to be able to get the ball to the guys that can make plays like Wali [Lundy], like [Michael] Johnson, Alvin [Pearman] and Heath [Miller].”

While Olsen’s skills were apparent in the spring, he was still obviously learning the offense. It is apparent to practice observers that Olsen has taken that next step in his development. Olsen agrees.
