Virginia 30, Clemson 10: Game Grades

Marques Hagans

Quarterback (B+)

Marques Hagans wasn’t flawless, but he was very, very good. Hagans completed only 54 percent of his passes but when he needed a big completion, he got it more often than not. On the night Hagans was responsible either by the air or on the ground for nine third-down conversions in 13 attempts.

Part of the lower level of accuracy was Hagans missed a couple of wide-open targets, but most of his incompletions were a result of dropped passes and good pressure from the Clemson defense, so some of the culpability will be laid on the offensive line. The Tigers never got to Hagans, but they did affect his accuracy.

What impressed me about Hagans’ performance was his poise, his command of the offense and his tenacity. Even under duress he remained in control and because of his rapid development over the first four weeks of the season he was able to scramble to buy time, knowing the routes and knowing where his receivers would be.
