‘Hoos Pick Up First Commit for 2006!

UVa has already seen the fruits of its February 19th junior day, as Coach Al Groh and company have received commitment #1 for the 2006 football recruiting class. The commitment comes from 6-4, 235-pound George Johnson Jr, who is an all-South Jersey prospect out of the state of New Jersey.

“He verballed to Virginia over the weekend yes,” Glassboro head coach Herb Neilio confirmed. “He was down there for the junior day for the basketball game.”

Johnson chose UVa over heavy interest from Boston College, Iowa and Maryland, among others. UVa was the only school to offer.

“UVa was one of the first schools last year to show a lot of interest,” Neilio said. “At the beginning of last football season actually they started showing a lot of interest in him, which was pretty early. They stayed in contact with him. It’s a great University and the parents are happy about it. They have great statistics in graduating black athletes, which George is happy about, and they have a great athletic program.”
