Johnson Comments on Commitment

The Cavs got the 2006 class off and running last weekend, when Glassboro (N.J.) recruit George Johnson gave a verbal commitment. Though last weekend’s visit was a big influence on his decision, Johnson had serious interest in UVa long before this past weekend’s unofficial visit.

“Well, I had been watching them on TV and my coach was telling me that they are a good school and that their defense is the same as ours,” Johnson said, discussing his early interest in UVa. “So I was just thinking that would be a good school for me. When Mike Groh came to our school [last October], I was shocked and surprised that a D-1 college came to our school to come see me. That made me very interested in them from the start and they were my number one college from the start.”

The experience last weekend is what sold Johnson on the ‘Hoos. He took us through the entire junior day event, which took place last Saturday, February 19th.

“I went down there with my little brother and my dad,” Johnson said. “When we first got there, we went in this room and talked to other players and talked to different coaches, saw the whole coaching staff and met some of the players that are on the team. After that we toured the school and I really liked the school. The school was really nice and the field was a lot bigger than I thought it was (laughs). After that we had lunch in the press box and then went to the Rotunda. Mike Groh told us about the history of UVa and how it all started and how well they’re doing right now. Then we went to the basketball game and watched the basketball game for a while. At halftime we went into the locker room area to talk to some more of the junior recruits that were there and talked to some of the coaches. Then we went back and watched the rest of the game and after the game said goodbye to the coaches.”
