Q&A: Highland Springs LB Jarrell Miller

Jarrell Miller is a player that Highland Springs head coach Scott Burton has been very excited about for several years now. Miller entered Highland Springs three years ago as 6-2, 220-pound freshman. He saw time at defensive end that year. He moved to linebacker his sophomore season and has played linebacker ever since. Now 6-3, 235 pounds, Miller, who also played on the offensive line this season after moving from fullback, projects as a linebacker on the next level.

Burton likes the progress he has seen out of his star prospect at the linebacker position.

“He’s getting there,” Burton said. “He has progressed a lot. I think towards the end of the year he started to become the dominant force we’ve all been waiting for. The way I described it to some recruiters is that, last year [as a sophomore], he had never played linebacker before so we had to work really hard just to get him in position to make plays. We got him in position to make plays but he usually didn’t make those plays. This year, he was in position and sometimes he made the plays and sometimes he didn’t, but then towards the end of the year he was in position and making all the plays. So hopefully the natural progression is that next year he’s in position and he makes the plays in highlight fashion.”

As a junior, he made over 60 tackles with 8 tackles-for-loss and one sack. Rated as one of the Rivals.com Top 100 juniors in the nation, Jarrell has written offers from Maryland, Nebraska, UVa and Virginia Tech according to coach Burton. Both UVa and Virginia Tech sent written offers to Miller on September 1, 2004, which was the first day they could officially offer. Miller says he has recently received written offers from LSU and Tennessee as well.
