Phoebus Star No Longer a Sleeper

Phoebus Head Coach Bill Dee looks to be correct in his earlier assessment of wide receiver Brent Vinson . Last month, Dee said “[Vinson]’s a heck of an athlete. I think he’s as good an athlete as there is in the state, but he just doesn’t have the experience. He’s going to be on everybody’s radar by the time spring’s over.”

Vinson showed his athleticism last Sunday during the Nike camp in Blacksburg. There, he measured in at 6-1, 185-pounds, posted a 39-inch vertical leap and ran a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash. Vinson took great advantage of his Nike camp opportunity, as he wants to get as much exposure as possible considering his limited experience.

“I’ve been playing football since I was young, but I just watched other kids play in the 9th and 10th grade,” Vinson said. “I used to think to myself that if I was to get out there – and not to disrespect any of the other kids out there – I used to think I could do way better than that. So I started playing last year and I had a pretty good season before I hurt my ankle. Towards the end of the season was when I really started doing some good stuff. I just didn’t feel enough people saw my talents, so I wanted to go to the Nike camp so everybody could see my talent. There are so many schools out there that the only thing for me to do is to go to a combine to get exposure.”

Vinson was anxious to compete against corners in the one-on-one competition. He shined there, too.
