TheSabre.com’s John Galinsky recently sat down with Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage to discuss various issues, including the 2004-05 year in athletics, where the department stands with its 10-year goals, the contract status of Brian O’Connor and Brian Boland, the basketball coaching search, John Paul Jones Arena fundraising, other facility projects, the possibility of adding varsity sports, financial issues facing the department and much more. Most of the questions came from Edge subscribers.

John Galinsky: First, now that all the spring sports seasons are over, let’s discuss the past school year. I wrote last week that it was a good year that was close to being a great year. Five Virginia teams won ACC championships and others came very close. Four teams – women’s lacrosse, men’s lacrosse, men’s tennis and women’s rowing – came close to winning national championships. A bunch of other teams made NCAA tournaments and Virginia will finish in the top 20 in the Directors Cup standings. On the other hand, you’ve set ambitious goals of winning 70 ACC titles and 12 national championships in 10 years. This year puts Virginia a little behind in that respect. Also, one of your revenue sports, men’s basketball, had a rough year and the other one, football, won eight games but didn’t beat any ranked opponents. Overall, how would you characterize the year?
