Ben C. Rain (Mobile, AL) star Johnnie Lett didn’t become UVa’s third commitment for the 2006 recruiting class, but he did leave with a good impression of the program and the Cavs remain in serious contention for the 6-8, 220-pound power forward prospect. Lett, a finalist for Division 5A state player of the year last season as a junior, could wait until the spring to make his collegiate decision.

“I’m going to wait for now,” Lett said. “I don’t know if I’ll wait until the spring. I really don’t know right now. It’s possible I could sign early, but it’s likely I’ll see what happens in the spring.”

Lett, who said the UVa staff “didn’t put any pressure on me” to commit, discussed his UVa official visit experience. He toured the grounds and took in Saturday’s big football win over Florida State.

“It went well,” said Lett, who was hosted by junior point guard T.J. Bannister. “The fans were great. I really liked the atmosphere. I feel like I fit in well with the team. I’m impressed with the coaches. They know what it takes to win.”

At this point, Virginia’s top competition appears to be Alabama (no offer), Miami (no offer) and South Alabama (offer and official visit). What’s up next for the 3-star recruit?

“I’m going to try to get down to Miami in a couple of weeks,” Lett said. “Miami hasn’t offered, but the coaches have been up to the school.”

When decision time does come, Lett says “I’m looking for a place where I can play right away.” Coach Leitao indicated to Lett that there is a good chance for early playing time.

We’ll continue to follow up with Lett, but it looks right now like he wants to see which other programs will offer before committing anywhere. Virginia has already landed commitments from two top prospects in shooting guard Solomon Tat and forward Jamil Tucker . Currently, it has one scholarship remaining for the 2006 class.
