Chalktalk: Defending the Post

It is fair to say that the 2005-06 Virginia men’s basketball team has challenges with inexperience, size, and depth at the post position. While Jason Cain, Tunji Soroye , and Laurynas Mikalauskas have played with great enthusiasm, iron-clad will, and relentless energy, the trio’s relative lack of size and collegiate playing experience make essentially every night a battle on the blocks. So with UNC and Tyler Hansbrough in town for an ACC showdown tonight at 7 p.m., let’s take a look at how the Hoos combat low-post threats.

Hansbrough, a 6-9, 235-pound freshman, is one of the most talented players in the ACC. He has started all 13 contests of his career, bursting out of the gates with averages of 17.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Hansbrough is reliable on the blocks, shooting 63.1 percent from the floor (70 of 111) and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line (90 of 117). Virginia coach Dave Leitao knows the Carolina rookie will present a challenge tonight.
