UVa has landed its fourth verbal commitment from the state of North Carolina. Today, before returning home from his official visit to UVa, Wakefield (Raleigh, N.C.) 6-4, 265-pound defensive tackle Gavin Smith verbally committed to the ‘Hoos. He becomes the 23rd player to commit in the 2006 recruiting class.

“I committed to Coach Groh this morning,” said Smith, who joins QB O.C. Wardlow , DB Rico Bell and WR Chris Dalton as UVa commits from the state of North Carolina. “All the players were cool, and that was the main selling point. They were all cool. They were like a family. There were three guys I hung out with, mainly. There was Chris Long , who was my host, and then Chris Olsen and Kevin McCabe . Everybody was around, though, so I got to spend time with a lot of them.”

Smith, who may major in History, enjoyed UVa’s grounds as well.
