Burd, Mills Headline Matoaca’s 2007 Class

WR Kris Burd and RB Patrick Mills – both of which earned Richmond Times-Dispatch first-team all-metro honors in 2005 – lead the Matoaca Warriors into 2006. Head coach Pat Manuel is counting on his dynamic rising seniors to help the program achieve even more than it did last season, when it won the Division 5 Group AAA Central Region championship and reached the state semifinals.

Kris Burd , who will be a three-year starter, plays wide receiver, safety and returns kicks and punts as well. At 6-1, 180 pounds, he has good size and is an excellent athlete. He plays basketball in addition to football.

“He can do it all,” Manuel said of Burd. “He’s a tremendous athlete. He has great speed. I don’t have the 40 time on me, but he’s faster than anybody we play. Once he gets away, teams have difficulty catching him. He has a great vertical jump. He’s very good on offense, but he’s good on defense too. He’s a big hitter.”

In 2005, Burd made 44 receptions for 840 yards and five touchdowns but missed the state semifinal contest due to a broken collarbone. A legit Division 1A prospect, he is drawing serious interest from a number of 1A programs and expects to receive written offers from Virginia and Virginia Tech.
