4-star prospect Jay Smith was in Blacksburg yesterday making his first ever visit to Virginia Tech. TechSideline.com caught up with Jay’s father, Mordecai, who discussed the experience and which schools, if any, may be standing out above the rest.

“When we got there, Curt Newsome met us and then we met with head coach Frank Beamer,” Smith said. “We met with coach Beamer for about 40 minutes. It was great that he took the time to talk with Jay and myself about everything. He talked about Virginia Tech and what they are trying to achieve and how he sees Jay fitting into the program. Jay was impressed.

“After meeting with coach Beamer, we talked to a few other coaches and then we met with academic personnel. The academic support group really impressed me. We had a lot of questions about whether or not Jay would be able to get an Architecture degree and play football, and I thought it went great.
