The Sabre’s ‘Why or Why Not’ series returns with the Virginia football team’s home opener set for this weekend. ‘Why or Why Not’ presents a statement to our guest panelist who then determines why it is right or why it is not. This week, WINA Radio’s Jed Williams, the host of The Best Seat in the House, takes on five Cavalier football items.

Virginia’s showing at Pittsburgh was a typical “UVa on the road” performance and there’s no cause for alarm.

JED: Yes and No …

I know, I know. I’m supposed put myself out on a limb here – not play both sides … but hey, it’s an election year. Seriously, this one has me conflicted. Yes, I expect this inexperienced and evolving group to struggle on the road this fall … mightily at times. And yes, history tells us that the “Pitt-fall” absolutely was a “typical UVa road performance” under Al Groh (9-19 in 5-plus years … including five straight).

But then this part: “there’s no cause for alarm.” Shouldn’t the road trend be all the cause we need FOR alarm?! If Virginia ever wants to be a player in the ACC’s upper division, then this trend must change. The Wahoos have the best home record of any ACC program over the last four seasons, yet are dwelling in low-rent bowls come Christmas. To me, that’s plenty alarming! Something has to give … and I think we know what something is – Virginia has to give better performances on the road.
