In some ways, the Virginia Tech game looked like a repeat of the Florida State debacle. Virginia’s offense got shut out while the defense played a decent football game. The special teams avoided the disaster of FSU at Tech, but other than that this game was similar. The grades are similar too.

In Al Groh’s first season at Virginia, an undermanned 4-6 Cavalier team pulled out all the stops and aggressively attacked a ranked Georgia Tech team. The result? A thrilling 39-38 upset of the Yellow Jackets. Fast forward five years. An undermanned 5-6 Cavalier team used an unimaginative, almost cowardly offensive game plan to simply keep the game close against a ranked Hokie team. The aggressive team won. The play-it-safe team lost.
