FanWatch: OstHoo, A True Hoo

OstHoo adopted his username while working in Eastern Europe.

Glenn Boyce coined the username OstHoo back in 1998 during the VirginiaFootball.com days when he first joined the message board world. At the time, Boyce worked in Eastern Europe and Ost is German for East. He’s kept the moniker since, leaving many Sabre-ites to ask exactly what OstHoo means. Now you know, but it could easily stand for true Hoo as well – Boyce fits the bill there too.

Starting with his Pep Band days in the late 80s and early 90s (Boyce was in the vested group from 1986-1992, which included “two years as a ‘townie'”), OstHoo slowly became immersed in orange and blue athletics.

“I had never been all that passionate about football or basketball, but I caught the fever during the JJ/Morgan/Crotty years in hoops and the 1987 football season – the bowl game vs. BYU was a huge turning point for my level of interest. It was great to be a part of our first ACC Championship squad and the Citrus Bowl after the 1989 season,” he says. “I loved the other bowl trips, men’s and women’s ACC Tournaments, and a couple NCAA trips, especially the women’s Final Four at Knoxville. It was awesome knocking out the Lady Vols in the Regional Finals when they would have had the Final Four on their home floor! And watching the Hoos take out the Sooners to advance to the Elite Eight at Rupp Arena … then watching the Glen Rice beat-down of the Hoos the year Michigan won the tourney.”

Obviously, OstHoo has seen quite a few Cavalier contests in person. That’s a trend that continues to this day. As a season ticket holder for football, he took in seven games last football season, which included road trips to ECU and Duke. Of course, that didn’t top his “all-time best” when he attended 10 games in 2003! That topped even the Pep Band days for Boyce.

Of course, seeing the Hoos in person helps OstHoo get away from the Terrapins, Hokies, and even Nittany Lions in Northern Virginia. Besides finding Cavalier coverage in NOVA, according to Boyce, “is brutal – does 570 AM really exist?!” Well, at least he has his fellow Sabre-ites to help follow the Hoos. Let’s follow OstHoo through “The FanWatch Fifteen” …
