Q&A – UVa Coach Anthony Poindexter

Anthony Poindexter coaches the running backs at UVa.

Anthony Poindexter is one of the most beloved athletes in school history following an outstanding four-year career in the orange and blue. Fans’ feelings haven’t changed about ‘Dex’ since his playing days and many still consider Poindexter, now the Virginia running backs coach, their favorite all-time favorite Cavalier.

And why not? Poindexter had a storied career at UVa, earning recognition as the 1998 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and as a two-time First-Team All-American; he’s also one of only three Hoos to earn first-team All-ACC honors three times. Dex’s career numbers are impressive: 342 tackles (ninth in school history and first among ACC defensive backs) and 12 interceptions (tied for fifth in school history). Of course, the legend started when he teamed with Adrian Burnim to stop Florida State’s Warrick Dunn short of the goal line in UVa’s 33-28 upset win in 1995.

While his career was just getting started with that sensational highlight, Poindexter’s time at Virginia ended with a devastating knee injury in the seventh game of his senior season. He eventually rehabbed after reconstructive surgery and made it to the NFL where he played briefly for the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. From there, he came back to Charlottesville to join the Cavs’ coaching staff, moving from a graduate assistant position to running backs coach over the course of his time with the program.
