UVa Vs. Virginia Tech Scouting Report: VT Offense

With the return of several key injured players, Stella has apparently got her groove back offensively heading in to the stretch run after a sluggish start. The Hokies have averaged 411 yards of offense over the last three games. Following a 395-yard effort against Florida State, offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said, “We knew we’d improve and get better. It was just a matter of when. We got Ed [Wang] back in there and we feel we have our best line-up in there now. That makes a difference up front. And we’ve been getting good quarterback play from both Sean [Glennon] and Tyrod [Taylor].”

Three big concerns face the Cavaliers this Saturday. Can the Hoos stop Tech’s emerging running game? Can they contain the elusive Tyrod Taylor ? Can they bottle up the Hokies’ quartet of play-making wide receivers?

Statistics

  • The 118 rushing yards by quarterback Tyrod Taylor against Clemson still stands as the Hokies’ only 100-yard rushing game of the season by an individual.
  • Virginia Tech currently has the longest, active scoring streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hokies have scored in 158 straight games. During its current streak, Tech has scored 13 or more points in all but seven games – UNC (1998 Gator Bowl, L, 42-3), at Pittsburgh (2001, L, 38-7), at West Virginia (2003, L, 28-7), Miami (2005, L, 27-7), at Boston College (2006, L, 22-3) and this year against LSU (L, 48-7) and BC (L, 10-14).
  • Saturday’s game will be just the eighth time in 89 meetings that both teams come in ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. The combined ranking of Virginia Tech (8th) and Virginia (16th) is the highest combination ever for the two teams entering their game this Saturday. The previous high was in 2004 (VT-11, UVa-16).

Coach Groh Says …

“Offensively, they seem to really have hit their stride here. They’ve averaged [around] 450 yards the last three games. The offensive line is clearly playing differently. And those four receivers, who we will be very pleased to bid adieu to after this game, they have the makings of what certainly would be a highly competitive 4×100 team if they chose to enter the NCAA track championships. Those players have been playing for four years; they’re very impressive players. They’ve got great ball skills and play-making ability. So they’re a one-play challenge just like the special teams are.”
