Sherando (Stephens City, VA) came up just short of a state title last season, falling to Amherst by a score of 56-12 in the championship game. The game could have, and likely would have, been much closer had the Warriors not lost star junior quarterback Ross Metheny to a broken fibula early in the contest.

“We had just had a great team game against Powhatan [in the state semifinals],” recalled Metheny, who had completed 5-8 passes for 96 yards in state title game before suffering the injury. Sherando had a 10-7 lead before he went down. “Not to take anything away from Amherst, but it was a different ball game earlier. But, you have to take it for what it is. Without a doubt, watching the team try to win a state championship without me was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in my life. We lost to a great Amherst team.”

The injury has been healing nicely and the 6-3, 190-pound lefty is well on his way towards a full recovery.
