FanWatch: UVA91 DUKE89’s Streak Grows

David Scott has quite the home game streak going at just 22 years old.

David Scott, UVA91 DUKE89, attends James Madison University in Harrisonburg, but on most Saturdays in the fall, his heart lies eastward. That’s because Scott has been a life-long UVa fan and he passionately supports the Hoos, particularly during football season. In fact, he hasn’t missed a Virginia home football game since 1994, a streak that he doesn’t see ending any time soon.

Obviously, Scott has seen quite a few memorable moments at Scott Stadium (there’s no proof that the name connection is why UVA91 DUKE89 loves the Hoos) in the last 15 years. 1995’s upset of FSU. Marques Hagans’ magician act against the Seminoles 10 years later. Thomas Jones running wild. Chris Long , Patrick Kerney, Aaron Brooks, and others.

One moment that still stands out for Scott is the “Hook and Ladder” game in 2001 when UVa shocked Georgia Tech late with the gimmick play.

“I just remember it was a great atmosphere and both teams were on fire offensively. I think Bryson Spinner ended up with over 400 yards of total offense … when was the last time a UVa QB did that? Then there was the play itself … a great call by [Bill] Musgrave to give us the improbable victory,” Scott said.

That’s how rewarding a trip back to Charlottesville can be for a Cavalier football fan. But what do Scott’s JMU friends think about his multiple treks back home on football weekends? He insists he has converted most of the Dukes into at least part-time Cav fans and some of his Madison friends travel with him to the game.

“The funny thing about my friends up here at JMU is that I’ve converted most of them into UVa fans but I still catch some flak from time to time, especially during the fall when I’m heading to C-ville almost every Saturday,” he said.

That’s fine with Scott. After all, there may be another hook and ladder play in the future and he wouldn’t want to miss that.

“The FanWatch Fifteen”

Favorite Cavalier sport?

This is a tough one. If you ask me in September, it’s football, February is basketball, and April is lacrosse, but if I have to choose one, I’d have to say football is probably the one I am most passionate about.

Thomas Jones is a favorite of many fans.

Favorite Cavalier athlete (past and/or present) and why?

Thomas Jones was and still is my all-time fave as far as UVa athletes go. I just remember his game in 1999 at BYU when I realized that we probably wouldn’t see another running back of that caliber wearing orange and blue again for a long time. Not to mention he was the quintessential student-athlete, maintaining a 3.0 GPA while racking up back-to-back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons … he was a great role model for a 14 year old, that’s for sure.

Favorite Cavalier coach (past and/or present) and why?

Sonny Randle was THE man!

Ha, ha! Nah, I’ll go with Dom Starsia here, mainly because he has been the most successful coach and I love lacrosse, especially the way Dom teaches it.

Most memorable Cavalier sports moment?

Is it too cliché to say the “95 goal-line stand against FSU? It is? Okay, then I’ll go with the 2001 UVa/Duke Basketball game when Adam Hall tipped in the game winner … I think the score was 91-89, but I could be wrong.

Cavalier sports fantasy?

On a cold day in Lane Stadium … UVa 63, VT 0 … ’nuff said.

Tailgating must have?

Evan Williams black label and my mom’s famous ham biscuits.

Shirts and ties or Sea of Orange?

When I was growing up and going to UVa games, I always looked at the students wearing the shirts and ties and envied them, but now-a-days, I would definitely consider myself part of the Sea of Orange.

The football program’s 2002 recruiting class – which included eventual linebacker star Kai Parham – had a lot of people excited.

Favorite thing about TheSabre.com? Or best Sabre memory?

Well my favorite memory was when I logged on February 5, 2002 to find out that we had landed three 5 stars who would completely change the state of UVa football forever and surely make us the powerhouse I had always hoped we’d become …

I’d have to say my favorite thing about TheSabre.com is the atmosphere. I love UVa sports and I love sharing that passion with thousands of others who feel the same way. Even when UVa is doing poorly (which, let’s face it, is a good amount of the time) the only place I really want to be is The Sabre. I guess the saying “misery loves company” applies to my adoration for TheSabre.com. Ha!

Oh, and JHoo’s “10 Things” articles are always on point.

What’s one thing most people might be surprised to learn about you?

I am probably the biggest Jim Morrison fan in the world … man-crush status!

Also, I was an intern for SportsWar and The Sabre two summers ago.

How did you meet your current tailgating group?

Well I pretty much have one person that I’ve got to meet up with before every UVa game and that’s because he’s the only person I know who bleeds as much orange and blue as I do. I didn’t meet him until I was a junior in high school, but we’ve been going to UVa games, both home and away, ever since. Hopefully he can make it with me ’til we’re in our 60’s.

What was your first car and what do you remember about it?

1991 maroon Toyota Camry which was my older sister’s and before that my mom’s. I remember trying to take it up to a “chill spot” in high school only to have it stuck in the mud. I had to call my buddy with an SUV to bail us out and proceeded to get grounded for not making it home in time for curfew.

Favorite food? Favorite Charlottesville restaurant that serves it?

Well one thing that most people know about me is that I am not too picky about what I eat, but my favorite thing to eat in Charlottesville is a double bacon cheeseburger all the way (hold the relish) from Riverside. A deli-egg sandwich on everything from Bodo’s is a very close second though.

What are the most played songs on your iPod right now? OR What’s in your CD player right now?

Ha, ha, I literally went down to my car and checked to see what CD was in the player only to find Supertramp’s Greatest Hits. But I’d have to say that I’ve been listening to Radiohead’s new album “In Rainbows” a lot recently … it’s great.

Since it is almost March, your favorite spring/summer vacation spot?

Outer Banks, North Carolina … no question

What’s your motto or catchphrase in life? OR What is one piece of advice you could give to current students/young people?

I’ve always liked this Max DePree quote: “We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.”

You think Coach Groh could take some lessons from that quote? 😉
