Al Groh and company have been in on 6-5, 275-pound Samuel Simpson , a star junior center out of Henry Clay High School (Lexington, KY), since his sophomore year. Simpson attended summer camp last year as well as Virginia’s victory over Wake Forest in the fall, and this past week he made a return trip to Charlottesville.

“I got down there Thursday night,” Simpson recalled. “Me and two other [Henry Clay juniors, including 6-3, 175-pound WR/LB Mike Federspiel ] got there about 8:30 and went to eat at the Virginian. One of our coaches who went to Virginia a long time ago took us around. On Thursday, we basically went out to eat and then went back to the hotel. We got up the next morning and went to the football offices at 8:30 in the morning. The Virginia coaches had the whole day planned out. We went to the McIntire School that morning. They had a professor there. Then, we went back to the football offices and talked to Coach Borbely and then went off and talked to Coach Lineburg. All three of us talked to Coach [Al] Groh a little bit, and then we went with Coach Borbely and Coach Lineburg to eat on campus. After that, we all went to the Friday meetings and met with the coaches. We left after that, went back to the room and then met up with [former Henry Clay star and current Virginia freshman cornerback] Chase [Minnifield] later that night for dinner.

“On Saturday, I met with Coach Borbely at 9 a.m. It was me and my parents. Then, my parents and I met with Coach Groh. We talked about things with the football team and what is going on there. I had all my questions answered the day before, so my parents were talking a lot to him. He told us how the Spring Game was going to go and he asked about my plans for the rest of the spring and summer and next fall.”
