FanWatch: Biscohoo Ready To Pass On Tradition

Cameron Garrison looks forward to introducing his children to UVa football.

Like many UVa alumni, Cameron Garrison (CLAS, 96) – biscohoo on The Sabre – has been looking forward to returning to Charlottesville for quite some time to introduce his children, Ash (2) and Francie (11 months), to all the sights and sounds of a Saturday afternoon at Scott Stadium.

As an attorney living in Kansas City, MO, Garrison doesn’t get back for football games as much as he would like to. But with his kids getting older, he is ready to return to his old stomping grounds this season to relive memories of tailgating on the range.

“I’m bringing my wife and kids back for a game this year – the Miami game is on my 35th birthday and I’m really looking forward to that,” Garrison said. “Our plan is that, as our kids get older, we’ll start making annual trips back for at least once game a year.”

In the fall of ’95, Garrison and friends settled into a new favorite tailgating spot, the range, where one of his friends had recently been awarded a room. Cameron plans to at least stop by his old favorite tailgating spot – the Lawn/range area – to relive some old memories before the game.

“I’ll definitely take the kids to the Lawn at some point during the weekend,” Garrison said. “But our pre-game routine will likely be more of a traditional tailgate with old friends.”

For Garrison, however, being a Wahoo is about much more than sports.

“Everything about UVa makes me proud to call myself an alum,” Garrison said. “I’m honored every time I tell someone I graduated from Virginia, and receive a response that – based solely on the very mention of UVa – makes clear the person I’m speaking to associates UVa graduates with class and intelligence.”

Let’s take a closer look at biscohoo in this edition of FanWatch:

“The FanWatch Fifteen”

Favorite Cavalier sport?

Basketball. I enjoy attending football games more, but I’m more of a hoops fan at heart. I think that’s because I was a much better high school basketball player than football player, so I understand basketball better.

Chris Slade and other Cavalier “sack masters” make biscohoo’s favorites list.

Favorite Cavalier athlete (past and/or present) and why?

It’s a tie between Chris Slade, Patrick Kerney, and Chris Long . I guess you can probably draw a pretty good conclusion about what I think is the most exciting play in football.

Favorite Cavalier coach (past and/or present) and why?

Brian O’Connor. I think what he’s done with the baseball team has been amazing.

Most memorable Cavalier sports moment?

33-28. A close second was traveling back to Kansas City with a bunch of buddies and watching UVa knock of No. 1 seeded KU at Kemper Arena. I was raised a Mizzou fan, so it was doubly good for me. Plus all the Mizzou and K-State fans made sure none of us bought a beer the entire night when we went out after the game.

Cavalier sports fantasy?

A 63-7 shellacking of Ohio State in the BCS Championship game, followed 3 months later by a 37-point blow out of dook and the fainting goats in the NCAA title game.

Tailgating must have?

Plenty of bourbon and Caroline Winter’s ham rolls.

Al Groh guided UVa to 9 wins in 2007-08, a strong season in Charlottesville.

Shirts and ties or Sea of Orange? Al Groh. Love him or hate him?

Whatever makes you comfortable. I’m more of a Sea of Orange guy myself, but I think you gotta do what works for you. As for Groh, I’m still on board. We just went 9-4, played on New Year’s Day for the first time in over a decade and came within a whisker of 10 wins and a top 20 final ranking. I’ve been a UVa fan long enough to realize that, to me, that seems to be cause for celebration, or at least satisfaction. I think Groh made some fundamental changes in how he operates a couple years ago and I think we need to see those through. All that being said, I’m also looking very much forward to the day Mike London returns to take over the program.

Favorite thing about TheSabre.com? Or best Sabre memory?

Like many, my best Sabre memory is probably the day that MJ, Brooks, and Parham all committed. More than any day I can remember, that day it seemed anything was possible for UVa football.

What’s one thing most people might be surprised to learn about you?

I’ve probably seen twice as many Phish shows as UVa football games. And I’ve seen a lot of UVa football.

How did you meet your spouse?

I met my wife at work. The best job benefit I’ve ever had.

What was your first car and what do you remember about it?

The first car I’ve had all to myself was a white Honda Accord. The best UVa memory with the car was packing it up and driving it to Ann Arbor for the opener against Michigan in ’95. It was a great trip, despite the heartbreaking finish.

Favorite food? Favorite Charlottesville restaurant that serves it?

My favorite food is probably a great lobster dinner, but I don’t know that you can find that in Charlottesville. If I had my choice of where to eat it, it would probably be at this little dive called Sunshine’s that’s right on the beach in Nevis. My favorite place to eat in Charlottesville is probably Zocalo.

What are the most played songs on your iPod right now?

Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, Beta Band, King Tubby, Scratch Perry, Talking Heads, Phish, The Disco Biscuits, Thievery Corporation, Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground.

Since it is almost summer, what is your favorite spring/summer vacation spot?

For summer vacations, it’s tough to beat hiking in the Colorado Rockies.

What is one piece of advice you could give to current students/young people?

Make the most of every day, always have fun, and don’t be afraid to try new things. As a wise man once said, “Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right.”
