Young Guns Impress at Southern Invitational

Can they really be that young?

For 16 year-old Malcolm Gilbert of Team Final and 15 year-old Dez Wells of NC Select Raptors Grey, both recruits on Virginia’s radar, the shocking answer is yes. While many college scouts were looking at the 17U division at the Southern Invitational in Charlottesville over the weekend, Gilbert and Wells’ play in the 16U division made them impossible to miss.

Gilbert, a sophomore out of St. Elizabeth High School in Wilmington (DE), impresses with sheer size alone. Standing a lean 6-foot-10, 210 pounds – “I’m 6-10-and-a-half, and it seems like I’m still growing,” Gilbert said – Gilbert dwarfed opponents in the 16U division.

“When I was twelve, I was about 6-foot,” Gilbert said. “Every August, it seems like I grew like two inches until now.”
