Evans Commits To Cavs

Jontel Evans

Earlier this week, Bethel (Hampton, VA) varsity boys’ basketball coach Craig Brehon said rising senior Jontel Evans made a big decision about his college future. Evans had decided to pursue basketball on the next level instead of football. Well, it didn’t take long for Evans to make his next choice – the 5-11, 180-pound point guard gave a verbal commitment to Virginia and Dave Leitao on Friday.

“Jontel just verbally committed to UVa and Coach Leitao a few minutes ago,” Brehon said via email this afternoon.

Evans made his college choice between Virginia and Marquette, who both offered the rising senior. He also received interest from Clemson, Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech, among others. He took two recent visits to the University of Virginia. One was for the Elite Camp last month, which is when he earned his official scholarship offer from Leitao.

Evans saw action at the point guard and scoring guard spots last season at Bethel where he averaged approximately 15 points per game in leading the Bruins to the Group AAA State Championship Game. He is a key member of Boo Williams 17-and-under AAU squad this offseason. On Tuesday night, Evans and his Boo Williams teammates captured the 17-and-under championship in the Nike Peach Jam tournament.

Evans is the first commitment for this recruiting class.
