Staton Jobe earned a scholarship after originally walking on at UVa.

Staton Jobe is hoping to continue a unique tradition in Charlottesville. The list of walk-ons that have impacted Cavalier football history is deep – especially those that catch the football. Two of Virginia’s most important current defenders, safety Byron Glaspy and linebacker Jon Copper are former walk-ons. The most well-known of Cavalier walk-ons might be the reigning NFC sack leader Patrick Kerney. And then there’s a laundry list of prominent pass catchers like former UVa wideouts Derek Dooley, Keith Mattioli, Tim Finkelston, Bryan Owen, and, maybe the most notable, Patrick Jeffers.

In an era of college football where the prototypical wide receiver is 6’3″ and 200 pounds, Division I-A programs were hesitant to offer the 6’0″, 182-pound Jobe a scholarship. But he did have track speed and excellent quickness and that was enough to convince Al Groh to offer the three-time Westlake High School letterman a chance to come earn a spot on the Virginia team.

Following his redshirt year in 2006 and despite his walk-on status, Jobe always felt on par with the scholarship players and was determined to compete for playing time last fall.
