Maryland Scouting Report: Offense & Kicking

After a sluggish start in the first two games of the season where the Terps averaged 14 points per game, the Maryland offense had a breakout game scoring touchdowns on its first three possessions en route to a 35-27 upset of then-ranked California. Over its last three outings, UM has averaged 35.3 points per game.

In the offseason, head coach Ralph Friedgen handed control of the offense over to new offensive coordinator James Franklin, enabling one of the football’s best young offensive minds to have an opportunity to call plays for the Terps and after some early speed bumps that unit has begun to gel under Franklin’s leadership.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look:

Statistics

  • Maryland’s 486 yards of total offense versus Eastern Michigan was the most by the Terps since they gained 524 yards in an overtime win over North Carolina on Nov. 12, 2005.
  • With its offensive output against Clemson, the Maryland offense has now scored at least 20 points in three consecutive games for the first time since Sept. 22 – Oct. 6, 2007, when it did so against Wake Forest, Rutgers, and Georgia Tech.
  • The Terps are currently ranked 39th in the nation in rushing offense (182.4 YPG), 63rd in scoring offense (26.8 PPG), 64th in total offense (366.4 YPG), and 89th in passing offense (184 YPG).
  • Virginia has been outscored 128-20 against Division I (FBS) opposition.
