GT Scouting Report: Offense & Kicking

Entering the season it could certainly be argued that Georgia Tech had more questions than any team in the ACC. On opening day against Jacksonville State, the Yellow Jackets were starting under a new coach, running an exotic new offense, and a new defense without several all-conference performers from 2007. The two-deep was loaded with freshmen and sophomores and the quarterback, all three running backs, two linebackers, and two defensive backs, among others, had never started a game.

Oh what a difference half a season makes.

The 21st-ranked Yellow Jackets, 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC, are nationally-ranked for the first time this season and are one win shy of becoming bowl eligible. Tech is coming off a 21-17 victory at Clemson as sophomore quarterback Josh Nesbitt hit sophomore receiver Demaryius Thomas on a 24-yard touchdown strike with 5:22 remaining for what proved to be the winning score. Looking at the ACC and national rushing stats any question as whether the triple option can work in a BCS conference should be answered by now as the Yellow Jackets currently sit fourth in total offense (365.3) and first in rushing offense (248.1) in the ACC.

Gardner-Webb held the potent Yellow Jacket rushing attack to less than 100 yards. Could the Cavaliers be number two?
