Greg’s Stock Report ’08: Miami

An average performance from the offense and defense produced average grades and a below average outcome. As we come down the stretch, there are several disturbing trends that hopefully were more a result of a superb Miami defense and not habitual problems. What trends? In order to make a run at the ACC title game, Virginia will need to perform better on first down, sustain drives, find a way to stop late game scoring drives by the opposition, and figure out how to stop the run more effectively.

Kickoff coverage. Last week we noted in our grade section that “after finally getting over the “C-” level against UNC for the first time since the season opener, the Cavaliers put together their best effort on kickoff coverage in the last seven games. UVa held the Jackets to 19.2 YPR and an average starting field position of the 25.6-yard line. We said we’d “need another couple of weeks to call it trending up” but after producing their second championship level grade this week (98.3) and holding down a solid Miami return group we’ll call this an upward trend.
