Clemson Scouting Report: Defense & Punting

Coming into the year there were three absolutes with respect to the Tiger defense. The line was deep and talented with the potential to bring lots of pressure. The linebackers, virtually novices, were quick and aggressive but prone to mistakes. The secondary was experienced and capable, though thin at safety.

The pass defense was amazing last year and CBs Crezdon Butler and Chris Chancellor plus safeties Chris Clemons and Michael Hamlin have all picked up where they left off. But injuries and inexperience have plagued the front seven. Clemson’s linebackers, regarded by coaches as a weak link entering the season, have proven that to be the case. The defensive front’s progress has been impeded by injuries to bandit DE Ricky Sapp and tackles Rashaad Jackson and Jamie Cumbie. Despite the troubles, Clemson still brings one of the top defenses the Cavaliers will face this season to Charlottesville on Saturday.
