Current job: Math teacher at Western Albemarle High School. Blundin is entering his second year there. He was at Monticello High for nine years.
Family: Wife Amy. They met at UVa. Four sons – Ethan, 11; Cole, 10; Luke, 7 and Joseph, 2.
At Virginia: 1987-1992. Blundin played basketball his first four years and football his last four years. As a basketball player, he was a sixth man and sometimes starter with career averages of 3.6 points and 4.5 rebounds. In football, he was the 1991 ACC Player of the Year and Dudley Award winner. He led the league with 1,902 passing yards. He threw 19 touchdowns and was not intercepted during the regular season. He had nine career games with 200 or more passing yards, including 305 against Virginia Tech in 1990.
Nicknames: “My friends on the football team called me ‘Hoops.’ Chris Berman on ESPN called me ‘Werewolves of Blundin.’ Last year, one of my students found it and got a few others to help put together a video called Werewolves of Blundin.”
Best Virginia moment: “Athletically, the one experience that sticks out was making it to the Elite Eight in basketball (in 1989). We beat Oklahoma in a game where we weren’t supposed to be close. That was a great time. From a school standpoint, I had a great experience taking a course and traveling to Mexico with the biology department, sleeping on the beaches and studying the reefs out there. Socially, I met my wife during my second year.”
Least favorite Virginia moment: “My first year. Leaving the Philadelphia area, I didn’t know anything about it. I really hadn’t traveled that much. That first year being away from home, feeling all the pressures was really tough. Making it through that was a real sense of accomplishment.”
Favorite Charlottesville restaurant/hangout: “It is interesting living here versus going to school here. We moved here because we loved it, Crozet is a great place to raise a family. My wife Amy and I love going into town to eat dinner. Continental Divide, a great little restaurant, is one we enjoy that we used to go to when we were in school. It’s been the same since I’ve been here.”
Last time back on Grounds: Blundin and his family are frequent attendees of UVa athletic events and they enjoy spending time at the school for non-athletic reasons, too. “My sons are getting into it. We have a great time.”
Teammates you stay in touch with most: “Kevin Cook, I played football with him. He was a year ahead of me. We’ll always run into guys; we have reunion weekends. Ray Roberts, we actually played together in Detroit. Dirk Katstra is here in town, I played basketball with him.”
