Joe Harris , a 6’6″, 200-pound shooting guard from Chelan (WA), committed to the Virginia men’s basketball program Monday morning; the guard’s coach and father, also Joe Harris , confirmed his son’s commitment with The Sabre via email while saying it was an exciting time for the family. Harris joins Will Regan in the Cavaliers’ 2010 recruiting class.

Lake Chelan (WA) basketball coach Joe Harris said his son “feels real good about his decision” to become part of Tony Bennett’s program. The Hoos beat out Washington State and Washington for the guard’s commitment.

Bennett had been recruiting Harris at WSU before taking the Virginia job and continued to pursue the guard in Charlottesville. UVa emerged as a favorite for Harris earlier this summer following his experience at UVa’s Elite Camp. After that experience, Harris said Virginia was “at the top” of his list and the Cavaliers were able to close the deal as Harris’ AAU season finished.

“I really liked Virginia when I went out there,” Harris told The Sabre earlier this month. “Everything was amazing. It was beautiful. That definitely was a big plus. I really like all the coaches.

“I really like the program and Coach Bennett and everything they have to offer,” he added. “Overall, they are a school that has shown a lot of interest in me.”

Harris averaged 26 points per game as a junior and earned Class 1A Player of the Year honors in Washington. He posted 22 points per game as a sophomore.

Stay tuned to The Sabre as we follow up for more on Harris’ decision.
