Q&A with Rijo Walker

Yesterday, before Bethel’s (Hampton, VA) preseason practice, 5-10, 175-pound cornerback prospect Rijo Walker called UVa assistant coach Latrell Scott to verbally commit to the University of Virginia. Head coach Jeff Nelson confirmed the commitment last night, and today Walker spoke at length about his college choice. Walker is the latest subject of “Q&A.”

A tremendously productive player over the past two seasons, Rijo Walker racked up 11 interceptions as a sophomore, which was his first year on the varsity level. He added four more picks last season, bringing his varsity career total to 15. Primarily a cornerback the past two seasons, Walker will see a more extensive role in 2009, lining up at slot receiver, returner and corner.

An excellent student, Walker carries a 3.65 GPA and has scored a combined 1230 on the Math and Verbal parts of the SAT. In addition to football, he also runs indoor and outdoor track.

I spoke briefly with Rijo last night. He had yet to speak with Al Groh (though Scott had searched up and down the McCue Center to find the Cavaliers head coach at the time Walker committed), but planned to speak with him later on in the evening…
