ChalkTalk: A Recurring Set

Through the first seven games of Tony Bennett’s inaugural season on the Virginia sidelines, the Cavaliers have averaged 69.0 points per game while shooting 46.0% from the floor and 40.2% from 3-point range. The issue, though, has been inconsistency, particularly in losses.

Some of that can be attributed to the installation of a new system, though Bennett has not implemented much of a modified Blocker/Mover offense that he used frequently at Washington State. The assumption there is that much of the focus has been tailored to the defensive end, where Bennett’s program philosophy begins.

The offensive lulls have been troublesome in losses. In both the Stanford and Penn State games, for example, UVa started the second half without much firepower on offense. Against the Cardinal, the Hoos did not score a field goal for the first 8:20 of the half. Against PSU, the Cavaliers scored 16 points in the first 17 minutes of the half while the Nittany Lions erased a halftime deficit and built a double-digit lead.
