2011 Class Needs: Defense

“I’ll be able to answer your questions in terms of needs, position needs, whether it’s defensive ends, defensive tackles, Will linebackers, inside linebackers, based on coming out of spring practice.” – UVa head coach Mike London on Signing Day, asked whether or not linebacker would be a big need in 2011.

Defensive back, linebacker, defensive line – look for all areas on the defensive side of the ball to be addressed in 2011. Cornerback appears to be the most pressing need at this time, but coach London and company need to stock up on linebackers and defensive linemen, too. There figures to be quite a bit of transition, with linebackers moving to the line, ends moving to tackle, safeties moving to linebacker. What happens this spring should go a long way towards determining which needs are most pressing in this class.

We will certainly revisit the defensive needs after spring practice, but for now let’s take a look at each position and figure out what the staff may be thinking right now.
