Coach Reflects On Mitchell’s Senior Season

Akil Mitchell

Akil Mitchell scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds in the NCISAA 3A state championship game last Saturday, edging out his season averages in points and rebounds. The 6-7, 215-pound forward turned in a solid senior season at Charlotte Christian (N.C.), which went 29-4 in 2009/2010. Coach Shonn Brown talks Mitchell’s development throughout the year and looks ahead to Mitchell’s career at the University of Virginia.

“One of the biggest things for him may not be skill, but for us it was his length and versatility,” Brown said of Mitchell, who averaged 13 points, 6.5 rebounds, two assists and 1.4 steals per game this past season. “He can post up, but he also can catch and shoot it. He is able to do both and be effective. If there was a smaller guy on him, he would post and score easily. Akil also has the luxury of having a long, tall wingspan. From a physical standpoint, his versatility is his strength.”
