Sooners End Cavaliers’ Season

Branden Kline allowed a three-run homer in the first inning and couldn’t bounce back.

On the brink of elimination Saturday evening, Oklahoma coach Sunny Golloway offered some pre-game words of encouragement to his team that appear now to be almost prophetic.

“In 2008, five teams lost the first game and came back and won the Super Regional and advanced to Omaha. Then I talked about last year and the courage that a team showed in going to Ole Miss and losing the first game 4-3, winning the second game 4-3 and getting to dog pile on the road,” Golloway said. “Some of our inspiration has come from very close by.”

The scoreboard said it all – 11 runs and three Virginia errors. For the second consecutive day the Sooners (49-16) pounded Cavalier pitching and Oklahoma’s aggressive offense pressured the Hoos (51-14) into defensive miscues and pitching mistakes that extended innings and led to add-on runs. In the end, the best team clearly earned a trip to the College World Series as OU claimed an 11-0 series finale win.
