London’s Message Resonates With Phelps

Brandon Phelps wanted to make a commitment before the start of his senior season, but by no means was he in any rush to decide his college future. By the time he left yesterday’s unofficial visit at the University of Virginia, though, the Damascus (MD) star cornerback/wide receiver prospect would be the latest prospect to pledge to head coach Mike London.

“I didn’t even know I was going to commit. I thought I was going to have to wait and maybe even have to make a decision at the end,” said the 6-0, 170-pound rising senior, who chose UVa over 20 other FBS offers including Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia Tech.

Yesterday’s visit included a meeting with an academic advisor and talking to coaches. It concluded with a presentation from Coach London. After meeting with London, Phelps, accompanied by his parents, headed for the parking lot seemingly ready to head home to Maryland. It was at that time that Phelps informed his parents that he wanted to be a Virginia Cavalier.

“I was nervous and excited at the same time,” Phelps said. “I wanted to make sure I talked to my parents. They said it was up to me. If this is what I wanted to do, they were going to support me.”
