Malcolm Brogdon , Atlanta Journal-Constitution AA Player of the Year as a junior in 2009/2010, has committed to the University of Virginia a day after returning from an official visit to Charlottesville. The 6-5, 205-pound Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA) wing guard informed the Virginia staff of his decision this morning.
Georgia Stars AAU coach Christopher Richards confirmed the decision. The AJC reported on the commitment today as well.
Richards did speak to what kind of player head coach Tony Bennett is getting.
“What Malcolm does so well is score the ball,” Richards said. “He scores in so many different ways for a guard his size, because of his strength and the fact that he works so hard out there. He can manufacture shots and make them consistently. At the Peach Jam this summer, he averaged 18 to 19 points per game.”
Brogdon performed at a high level on the AAU circuit throughout the spring and summer, carrying over what he had been doing for Greater Atlanta Christian head coach Eddie Martin. Butler, Clemson, Georgia, Harvard, Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Virginia came through with official scholarship offers as a result.
“In the AAU season, he really shot from the outside a little better,” Richards said. “He was able to show that he could knock down the outside shot consistently against top competition.
“He played really well in the spring, which was when college coaches started to take notice. They followed him and then he continued to play well this summer, especially in the Peach Jam.”
Richards has coached Brogdon since 2007. Right away, the Georgia Stars coach saw Division 1 potential.
“I was always sure he’d be a D1 recruit,” Richards said. “I thought he would be at least a mid-major with the chance to be a high-major player. He has really turned the corner. He worked his way to where he is now. Malcolm is like a brother to me. I’m really happy for him.”
Getting the job done in the classroom and on the court, Brogdon carries a 3.5 GPA.
“The thing about Malcolm is that he really is a student athlete,” Richards said. “He has a 3.5 GPA at a tough school and he gets it done. He works so hard. He’s in the gym all the time.”
