Atkins Commits To UVa

Tony Bennett and company scored some perimeter potential with their first two commitments of the 2011 class. Coach Bennett has now secured some frontcourt help in 6-8, 210-pound power forward Darion Atkins , who has pledged to the Hoos over Notre Dame.

Atkins, a senior out of Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, revealed his decision this morning.

“Decision has been made – UVa,” Landon School head coach Andy Luther wrote via e-mail.

In Atkins, UVa gets a player known for his athletic ability, defensive prowess and rebounding ability.

“He is extremely long and athletic,” Luther said of Atkins, who possesses a 7’2″ wing span. “He has incredible timing as a shot-blocker. He has impressive vertical abilities and he gets back up off the floor really fast, which probably explains his gifts as a shot-blocker. He runs the floor very well. He’s very active on the offensive glass. He has a good nose for the ball.”

Atkins, rated a 3-star prospect by ESPN.com and Rivals.com, joins Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA) guard Paul Jesperson (4-star ESPN and Scout, 3-star Rivals) in Virginia’s 2011 class. As it is currently projected, UVa now has just one more scholarship available for the 2011 class.
