Defense’s Dire Day Hurts Cause

UVa’s defense struggled in loss to Duke.

In the aftermath of Virginia’s 55-48 loss to Duke on Saturday, I can’t get the 1988 hip hop song by Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock “It Takes Two” out of my mind. You know: “It takes two to make a thing go right. It takes two to make it outta sight.” On a day where the single-game passing yards record fell and the Cavalier offense put up a dizzying 643 yards, the UVa defense again stumbled in a stomach-aching loss.

That’s right, 643 yards of offense. That’s right, 48 points. That’s right, Marc Verica set a program record as he threw for 417 yards to top the previous best of 393 by Matt Schaub against N.C. State in 2003. That’s right, Dontrelle Inman threatened the program record for single-game receiving yards with 239, falling just short of Ken Shelton’s 241-yard day against William & Mary in 1974.

And Virginia lost.
