High school stars and top college prospects will meet in the inaugural Chesapeake Bowl, set to take place this Thursday, December 30, at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University.
In total, the North team — featuring standout high school seniors from the Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania — and the South team — featuring talents from D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia — feature approximately 71 FBS-level prospects. Thirty-seven North players have accepted or received an FBS offer, compared to 34 players from the South.
Without question, a large amount of talent will be on display.
“To me, the talent level here is second to none,” said Chesapeake Bowl organizer Tony Kennedy , President of Extra Point Productions, Inc., a Sports Marketing Event company. “I’d put our talent up against the Army Bowl and the Under Armour All-American Bowl, and they can pick from 50 states.”
Kennedy, who starred on the gridiron at Bladensburg High School (MD) and then at Virginia Tech, is pleased be able to showcase the talent level of the mid-Atlantic region. Talent, he feels, stacks up well with any other region in the country.
“You always hear about the South, but to me the Mid-Atlantic is the heart and soul for any recruiting of football,” Kennedy said. “I’d put it up against anywhere in the country. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland…it just doesn’t get any better than that. Add in D.C., Delaware, West Virginia. Powerhouse schools feed into all these areas for recruits.”
Boston College, Maryland, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia are among the schools that have commitments expected to play. UVa Will Be Well Represented
Seven University of Virginia commitments are scheduled to play, and all will play for the South squad. They include defensive end Caleb Taylor .
Dominique Terrell , two of Virginia’s top remaining targets in the 2011 class, are also scheduled to play for the South. The 6-0, 175-pound Jennings, who has taken official visits to Virginia and Ohio State and will visit UCLA, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in January, will play wide receiver. The 5-11, 175-pound Terrell, a standout out of Osbourn (Manassas, VA), will play receiver as well. He is scheduled to take an official to UVa the weekend of January 21.
