Details Part Of UVa’s Defensive Mindset

When UVa Defensive Coordinator Jim Reid spoke with the media on Monday, he emphasized the need for better consistency on defense. Linebacker Steve Greer said Friday that the Cavaliers are dialed in on improving the details of defense. Coach Mike London talked about responsibility with details. In other words, the Cavaliers are focused on improving the product on defense this spring.

As well they should. The Hoos allowed 28.2 points per game, 396.1 yards per game, 6.1 yards per play, and 5.1 yards per carry. UVa gave up big scoring plays routinely – Richmond (70 yards), FSU (70), UNC (81), Eastern Michigan (55, 31, 53), Miami (29, 60), Duke (30, 20, 37, 35), Boston College (39), and Virginia Tech (20) all scored from at least 20 yards away. That doesn’t even count the non-scoring plays that gobbled up yards or the litany of penalties on that side of the ball.

All of which is why the mentality this spring seems to be focused on tightening the screws on defense in an effort to improve consistency and improve the results.
