More With Wil Wahee

Wil Wahee only has two years of football experience, but the 5-10, 185-pound junior showed enough to sway Virginia head coach Mike London into offering a full scholarship last weekend. Wahee, a player Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, VA) linebackers coach Shannon Messick calls a “diamond in the rough,” made big plays on offense while being highly productive on defense last season.

“I feel that I’ve come a long [way] since I began playing football, and I pray that I’m at the beginning of a long career,” said Wahee, who caught 13 passes for 304 yards (over 23 YPC average) and six touchdowns at wide receiver. At linebacker, he totaled 105 tackles with 14 tackles for loss and eight pass break-ups. “I feel that if I continue to work hard, I’ll go as far as God wants me to.”

Coach Messick also called Wahee a “team guy” for playing linebacker, a position the new Cavaliers recruit doesn’t transition to on the major college level. UVa is recruiting him as a defensive back with cornerback as the likeliest position. Wahee wouldn’t mind a crack at returning kicks and/or punts as well.

“I’ll play wherever I’m needed in college, but I feel that I’m best suited as a defensive back/return guy,” said Wahee, a fast prospect who helped Norfolk Christian’s 4X100 relay team to a first place finish at the Greenbrier Christian Meet in March. He has been clocked in the 40 in under 4.5 seconds.
