Fork Union Military Academy (VA) prep head coach Micky Sullivan said quarterback Christian Hackenberg “grew up a lot” over the course of the 2010 season, Hackenberg’s first at FUMA. The Fluvanna native, a rising junior, certainly came through when it mattered most. He threw for 123 yards and a score in FUMA’s VISAA state semifinal win over top seeded Liberty Christian Academy, and followed with 168 yards and a touchdown in the VISAA championship game against Collegiate. Hackenberg did not throw an interception in either contest, helping the Blue Devils to its first state championship since 2002.

“Christian’s real good football player,” Sullivan said. “He’s 6’4″, over 200 pounds. He’s athletic, and he has good feet. He has what I think is great arm strength and good vision. He makes the throws the college coaches want to see young guys make. He has grown up around athletics. He is a typical sophomore in some ways, but not in others.”

Hackenberg’s father, Erick, played quarterback for the University of Virginia from 1988-1992. Christian remembers “starting young” in football, eventually following in his father’s footsteps and playing quarterback.

“I’ve had a football in my hand ever since I can remember. When the time came to form fundamentals, he has helped out with that,” Hackenberg said of his father.
