In a season where clutch hitting and big two-out rallies were the norm, the Cavaliers failed 12 of 13 times to plate a run with runners in scoring position and that sealed their fate in Friday’s 13-inning, 3-2 loss to South Carolina in the College World Series. The loss dropped the Hoos to a 56-12 final mark for the season and eliminated the Cavaliers from the CWS in Omaha.

USC’s Adam Matthews scored the game-winning run on senior pitcher Cody Winiarski’s throwing error. Winiarski (6-4) was attempting to get the lead runner at third on a bunt attempt. The throw was low and bounced away from third baseman Steven Proscia, allowing Matthews to score the winning run for the Gamecocks (53-14).
