UVa Beats Out BC, PSU For Severin

2012 class commitment number 24 is in the fold. This afternoon, Worcester Academy (Worcester, MA) wide receiver Canaan Severin announced that he will attend University of Virginia, choosing the Cavaliers over fellow finalists Boston College and Penn State. The 6’3″, 210-pound prospect announced his choice today at a press conference at his school.

Severin had double-digit major FBS scholarship offers to consider, but he ultimately narrowed the field down to the Cavaliers, Eagles and Nittany Lions. He made one final visit to each of the three finalists, taking in a preseason practice at UVa in August, making an official visit to Boston College the first weekend of September, and traveling to Penn State unofficially for the Alabama game.

“I could tell what kind of place Virginia is academically by talking to everyone,” Severin told TheSabre.com following his August trip to Charlottesville. “I met with the Dean of Admissions. I visited with some faculty. I can tell what Coach London is trying to do there. He does a good job at it.”

A versatile athlete, Severin has potential as a wide receiver, safety, or even linebacker on the college level. UVa likes him initially as a receiver, the position where he hauled in 35 receptions for 550 yards and five scores in 2010. Virginia now has three sure-fire wide receivers in the class, including Severin, Jamaal Brown and Mario Nixon . Bayside’s Anthony Cooper is a likely receiver, though safety is a possibility, and other receiver possibilities include Maurice Canady and Kyle Dockins .

Rivals.com ranks Severin as a 4-star prospect, while ESPN.com and Scout.com have him as a 3-star recruit.

“They want me to play wide receiver. They wanted to get another big wide receiver in this class and they want me for that,” Severin said in August, discussing what position Virginia is recruiting him to play. He spent a lot of time with primary recruiter Jim Reid and wide receivers coach Shawn Moore that day. “They also like my personality and character. They said they are building the team with guys like me.”
