Strategy Session: A Look Ahead To 2013

Virginia could sign as many as 28 prospects in the 2012 class. Twenty-four high school seniors have committed, but the number is actually 25 because 2011 holdover Adrian Gamble plans to enroll in Charlottesville after a postgraduate year at Fork Union Military Academy. Virginia is still actively pursuing high school seniors, but it’s definitely not too early to take a look at 2013 and where the staff may focus its efforts there.

Trying to figure the numbers in a given class is getting to be pretty difficult. Take the 2012 class as an example. This past spring, we heard this would be an average class, somewhere between 18 and 20. That number has swelled to 25-28, though perhaps that is not a surprise given this is only year two of the Mike London era, UVa is consistently accepting mid-year enrollees, etc. The size of each class is typically fluid. It would be a surprise, however, to see the 2013 number be as fluid as this year’s was. I certainly don’t expect a full boat in 2013, and at this point I believe the final number will be below 20.

The number of scholarship players projected to be on the 2013 season roster now sits at 75. Attrition (whether its transfers, 5th-year seniors not returning, injuries, etc.) will happen, so there will certainly be more than 10 spots available for the 2013 class. In the end, I look for the 2013 number to be somewhere in the teens.
