Spring Practice Report: New Faces at Several Positions

The Cavaliers continued spring camp with a focus on skill and mechanical development Wednesday morning. The Hoos will be in helmets only until Friday when they move into practice in shoulder pads, so most of Wednesday was built around improving fundamentals and building stamina.

“Without having the contact, the footwork, fundamentals and skills,” is the what coach Mike London says practice focuses on. “We try to get these guys taxed as far as getting tired now because later they’ll have pads on and it’ll be a different feel.”

London believes getting guys prepared for the physical rigors of a game, honing their ability to execute when tired and sore will lead to better performances and better results in fourth quarters.

“If you can play tired but still be fundamentally sound then you still can execute in the later parts of game or practice,” said London. “[We’re] spending a lot of time in these two helmeted periods, and even when we get into upper shells, being in position, knowing the call and being precise in your alignment so that when the contact occurs, then it’s about the ability you have. Work on the mental part of it, the execution and then when we put it all together we have a chance to physically tackle someone and make plays.”
