Hoo Preview 2012: How Receiver Screens Work

One of the themes that has emerged from both spring and fall camp in 2012 is that the Virginia offense wants to me more explosive this season. From early looks at August practice, receiver is an obvious position where UVa has speed and playmaking ability to potentially produce more explosive plays. That’s why Cavalier fans might see an increased use in the wide receiver screen this season.

Virginia had on-and-off success last season with the receiver screen, most notably in the Miami game where Darius Jennings took a screen play 53 yards to the house in UVa’s 28-21 victory. He also picked up good yardage on a screen call early in the game as well. A wide receiver screen was also responsible for the Hoos’ overtime win against Idaho when Dominique Terrell took David Watford ‘s loft on second-and-goal at the 27-yard line in for a score and a 21-14 lead.
