Hoo Preview 2012: Jennings Hopes To Shine

Darius Jennings pulled in 1 TD catch as a freshman.

After a week of open practices, it’s easy to see the impact that third-year coach Mike London has had on the Virginia football program. There is competition on both sides of the ball and there are athletes all over the field. London has gotten it done on the recruiting trail, bringing elite talent to Charlottesville. One of the crown jewels of London’s first recruiting class was former Gilman standout Darius Jennings , who is ready to make a big impact in his sophomore season.

Jennings came to UVa as one of the top-rated athletes in the country in the class of 2011; he earned recognition as the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Maryland too. A high school quarterback, he moved to wide receiver at UVa and immediately wowed Cavalier fans with his athleticism. Jennings showed flashes of brilliance during his freshman campaign. The Baltimore native took a screen pass 53 yards for a touchdown in Virginia’s win at Miami. He also caught four passes for 35 yards in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta. Jennings finished the season with 20 receptions for 238 yards as well as a team-best 599 kick return yards. However, Jennings showed his inexperience on several occasions, either running a poor route or dropping the ball. Without the benefit of a redshirt year, Jennings had only one month to learn a brand new position at the collegiate level.
