Mizzell Picks Virginia

Taquan Mizzell

Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) rising senior running back Taquan Mizzell thanked his family, friends, teammates and coaches. He then stated his senior season goals, which included winning a state championship and doing well in the classroom and the community. Finally, he was ready to reveal his college choice.

“And now, in 2013, I will be attending… the University of Virginia,” Mizzell announced in front of a large gathering in Bayside’s auditorium.

In Mizzell, whose nickname is “Smoke,” UVa gets its first 5-star recruit in the class of 2013. Rivals.com has given the 5’10”, 185-pound tailback the 5-star distinction, while ESPN.com, 247Sports.com and Scout.com all rank him as a 4-star recruit. Mizzell is also TheSabre.com’s no. 3 overall recruit in the Preseason In-State Top 40 Rankings for the class of 2013.

Mizzell chose the Cavaliers over North Carolina and West Virginia, but he had over 20 major FBS scholarship offers in total. UVa now has 18 verbal commitments in its class of 2013.

TheSabre.com will have analysis and more from Mizzell in an EDGE article soon, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out excerpts from Smoke’s press conference below.
